For over 10,000 years, the coastal area in which the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center now sits has been inhabited and collectively used by Indigenous Algonquin-speaking peoples. Long Island’s shoreline—where land and water meet—continues to be a site of great cultural, ecological, and economic significance for the Montaukett, Shinnecock, and Unkechaug people.
